The variety is vigorous, and shoots ripen well. Leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed, wrinkled, with strong tomentose pubescence on the underside. Clusters are medium-sized, conical, branched, and density varies from medium to high. Berries are small, dark violet in color, and have firm skin and juicy flesh.

The variety is demanding in the selection of warm sites to control acidity. Yield is high; thinning is recommended to obtain high-quality wines. It possesses resistance to diseases and frosts at the level of other European Vitis vinifera varieties and requires preventative treatment against fungal diseases.

Wines from the André variety are distinguished by a deep ruby color, full body, balanced tannins, and aging potential. The flavor and aroma profile is dominated by notes of blackberry, blueberry, plum, and black spices.
