The variety is autochthonous to Spain and Portugal and is known by various names, such as Tinta Roriz in northern Portugal and Tempranillo in Spain. It is exclusively a wine grape variety used both for creating single-varietal wines and for producing blends.
Wines from this grape are distinguished by their intense color, full body, and characteristic notes of cherry, violet, and dark berries, which are complemented by hints of chocolate, coffee, and spices during aging. Morphologically, the variety is characterized by large leaves and an open tip of young shoots.
As a representative of the Vitis vinifera species, the variety requires management regarding grape diseases. Cultivation requires the use of trellises for vine training.
