The variety is a representative of the Vitis vinifera species and is of Portuguese origin. Genetic analysis has established that it is a cross between Cayetana Blanca and Alfrocheiro varieties. In literature, it may appear under the synonyms Castelão Nacional or Castellao.
The purpose of the variety is the production of red wines. The early-ripening grape produces soft, balanced wines with low acidity and moderate tannins, which is why it is more frequently used in blends. It is most common in the Portuguese regions of Bairrada and Tejo.
