The variety is a somatic mutation of Canaiolo nero at the berry color locus on the 2nd chromosome, which determines the pink color of the skin. Currently, the variety has practically disappeared from general practice, persisting only in isolated plantings in the territory of Tuscany as an element of winemaking heritage.
The purpose of the variety is wine production, predominantly rosé wines. The variety is considered rare and little-studied on an industrial scale, therefore specialized agronomic data regarding its characteristics are extremely limited. Due to its origin from Canaiolo nero, traits of the parent form are often attributed to it, including mid-late ripening.
