The variety has vines with low growth vigor. The leaf is rounded, usually five-lobed, with dense pubescence on the underside. The bunch is medium-sized, cylindrical or cylindroconical, with a weight of 250–300 g. The berry is medium-sized, rounded, dark violet-blue with a thick waxy bloom, thick skin, and juicy pulp.
The variety is susceptible to downy mildew, grey mold, and frost, but shows resistance to powdery mildew and drought. It tolerates grafting onto American rootstocks poorly. A valuable property is the ability of the berries to dry out without rotting, which was historically used in the 'governo' winemaking technique.
A wine variety for the production of wines with a ruby-red color, soft tannins, and fruity-herbal aromatics. It is traditionally used in blends, most notably in Chianti and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Single-varietal wines are rare.
