The Cannonao variety is the local Sardinian name for the international Grenache variety. Modern DNA studies and archaeological findings suggest its endemic origin on Sardinia and an ancient history of cultivation in the Mediterranean.
The plant belongs to the late-ripening group of varieties. It prefers a hot, dry climate, adapts well to poor soils, and is cultivated primarily as a bush vine. The variety is characterized by low yield, and its berries have thin skin.
The grapes are intended exclusively for winemaking. It is used to produce full-bodied red and rosé wines with high alcohol content, moderate tannins, mild acidity, and aromas of red fruits, spices, and white pepper.
