The variety is indigenous to Italy with a historical distribution area in the Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany regions. It is often confused with the Cagnina, Fortana, and Canaiolo Nero varieties, however, it is distinguished as an independent variety in official catalogs. Used in winemaking, primarily in blends.
The clusters have an elongated pyramidal shape and moderate density. The berries are medium to large in size, round, with a thick skin of dark blue or black color and abundant bloom. The ripening period occurs from the end of September to the middle of October, with uneven berry ripening noted.
The plant is vigorous and well adapted to the conditions of lowland sites. The variety is considered rare and practically endangered, cultivated in small private vineyards. The wines are characterized by high acidity and tannin levels with fruity and mineral notes.
