The variety is autochthonous to Italy and has ancient folk origins. Its historical presence is recorded in the central regions of the country, particularly in the territories between Abruzzo and Lazio, as well as in Veneto.
The use of the variety is technical. Historically, it was used in blends with other local varieties to create full-bodied wines with intense color. The letter "N" in the name indicates the black or dark blue color of the berry skin.
The name of the variety is etymologically linked to rural toponyms denoting stony or hilly soils to which this grape has historically adapted. At present, detailed agrobiological characteristics of the variety are not specified in specialized databases.
