The variety has a medium to below-average vine vigor. Bunches are small or medium-sized, conical, compact, and often winged. Berries are small or medium, round, dark violet in color with thick skin and bloom.
Colorino has medium to high disease resistance, although it shows particular sensitivity to powdery mildew (Oidium). Winemaking characteristics include pronounced tannins, good structure, and moderate acidity, with aromas of wild berries, spices, and leather.
Traditionally, the variety is used in blends, particularly with Sangiovese for the production of Chianti wines, to improve the color and composition of the wine. It is also found in monovarietal form.
