The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera. Genetic studies, including DNA analysis, confirm the origin of Colombana nera from the Mammolo variety, also known as Sciaccarello.

The variety is intended for winemaking and is historically used in blends, in particular with Sangiovese and Trebbiano varieties. Currently, the variety is considered rare and gradually disappearing from cultivation; detailed agrotechnical characteristics are absent in sources.
