The Plavac mali variety originates from Dalmatia and is a descendant of the Crljenak kaštelanski (Zinfandel) and Dobričić varieties. It belongs to technical (wine) varieties and requires a long growing season for full accumulation of sugars and phenolic compounds.

Wines made from this grape possess high density and intense aromas of dark berries and fruits. Product quality depends directly on growing conditions: the most expressive wines are obtained on southern slopes, such as the Pelješac peninsula.

Morphologically, the variety is characterized by perfect flowers and medium-sized, five-lobed leaves with a leathery, wrinkled surface. The plant is well-compatible with American rootstocks of the Vitis berlandieri x Vitis riparia and Vitis riparia x Vitis rupestris groups.
