The variety is a wine grape variety and presumably originates from the southwest of France. Genetically, Jurançon noir is the result of a cross between the varieties Folle blanche and Cot (Malbec).
The name Dame noir can lead to confusion, as in other contexts it is used to designate a fig variety (Ficus carica) called Col de Dame Noir, and is also found as an alternative name for the grape variety Boullier.
