Leaf is medium to large, five-lobed, pentagonal in shape, deeply divided with slight pubescence. Cluster is small or medium, cylindro-conical in shape, dense or medium density. Berries are medium-sized, round, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom and skin of medium thickness or thick.
Late-maturing variety with high vine vigor. Resistant to grey mold, but prone to berry shatter, which affects cluster density. Suitable for the withering process (appassimento), making it sought after in the production of Amarone-style wines.
Wines from this variety possess a ruby color, pronounced acidity, and a spicy aroma with notes of berries, spices, and forest floor. The taste is characterized as herbaceous with soft tannins.
