The vine is characterized by vigorous growth. Leaves are medium-sized, five-lobed or three-lobed, with dense pubescence on the underside. Clusters are medium, elongated, and often compact. Berries are small or medium, round, blue-black in color with a waxy bloom.

The variety is resistant to drought and powdery mildew, but is vulnerable to noble rot. Yield depends heavily on growing conditions and is generally not high. There are various biotypes of the variety, depending on the terroir.

Wines made from this grape possess a deep color, pronounced tannins, and good acidity. In their youth, they can be overly astringent and require many years of aging in barrels.
