The variety is an indigenous Portuguese grape, historically known since the 18th century. It is traditionally used for creating high-quality wines with high alcohol content, including fortified wines of the Carcavelos region, as well as in blends for white table wines.
The plant is an early-ripening and low-yielding variety. It possesses weak resistance to downy mildew and grey mold, which caused planting areas to decrease in the past. Wines from this variety are distinguished by intense color, aroma, medium must acidity, and good aging potential.
The variety has many synonyms and has historically been the subject of confusion with other varieties, such as Loureiro or Pedro Ximénez. Currently, it is considered rare and nearly extinct, with programs for its revival active in Portugal.
