The variety is a wine grape and has been known since the 14th century. The maturity period is medium; the fruits ripen approximately two weeks earlier than the Pinot Noir variety. The crop is characterized by high yield, which is why it historically required volume control to maintain wine quality.

The plant is noted for its hardiness and low maintenance requirements. Wines produced from this variety have high acidity, moderate to low tannin levels, and pronounced notes of cherry, raspberry, and strawberry.
