The variety is of natural origin and has been historically cultivated in the Asti and Cuneo areas. It received its name “partridge leg” due to the characteristic bright red color of the stems, which appears before the fruit ripens. The vine has medium vigor; the variety is characterized by susceptibility to frost and fungal diseases.
The leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal in shape, deeply lobed, with a pubescent underside. The cluster is medium-sized, pyramidal or cylindro-conical in shape, of medium density. The berries are quite large, spheroidal in shape, dark blue with a purple hue and a thick waxy bloom.
The variety belongs to the late or very late ripening group; the harvest period falls at the end of September — beginning of October. Wines produced from this grape have a light garnet color, an intense aroma with notes of spices, cherry and jam, as well as a rich taste with pronounced tannins.
