The variety is autochthonous to the Istria region (Croatia) and is found in the adjacent areas of Italy and Slovenia. Genetic studies confirm that it has a unique SSR-marker profile, distinct from other local varieties, including Rebula and Vitovska.
It belongs to the category of technical or wine grape varieties. It has been researched for its potential in the production of sparkling wines using the traditional method. Due to the fact that the variety was long considered poorly studied or endangered, detailed morphological and agrotechnical data on it in publications are limited.
