The variety is a hybrid of the Petit Bouschet and Garnacha varieties. A unique morphological feature is the pigmented berry pulp, which allows for the production of intensely red-colored juice, unlike most varieties of the same species.
The plant possesses high fertility and yield, and tolerates low winter temperatures well. The thick skin of the berries ensures resistance to rot. Cultivation requires deep soils, regular irrigation, and the application of phosphorus fertilizers.
Wines from this variety are distinguished by high density, tannin levels, and above-average alcohol content. The variety is often used in blends to improve the color and fullness of wines; varietal wines may have notes of black berries, plum, black pepper, licorice, and dark chocolate.
