The variety is a color mutation of the black Garnacha tinta variety. Morphologically, it is characterized by rounded five-lobed leaves without pubescence and bisexual flowers. Bunches are medium or small, conical or cylindrical-conical in shape, dense or medium-dense.
Berries are small, rounded, grayish-reddish in color with a thick waxy bloom and thin skin. The variety has low resistance to frost and fungal diseases, but tolerates drought well and is suitable for cultivation on poor stony soils. Yield exceeds that of Garnacha blanca.
The purpose of the variety is technical, for wine production. Berry juice is uncolored; finished wines possess fruity notes, oily texture, and low acidity. The variety is not widespread and is known under a number of synonyms, including Garnacha Roja, Garnatxa Gris, and Szuerke Grenache.
