The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera L. The letter N in the name indicates the black or dark blue color of the berry skin. The variety is included in the official national catalogues of Greece and is authorized for use in winemaking.
The plant belongs to the Mavroudia group of varieties and has genetic similarity to the Mavrokorakas variety. The variety has been grown on the island of Skiathos since the 18th century, where it was known as Korizotis, and in the early 20th century it was mentioned in literature as Kartsotis.
