The variety is of Greek origin and is classified as a technical (wine) variety. Historically, the name is mentioned in the context of the Mavroudia group of varieties, which unites black or dark grape varieties of the region.

There are a number of synonyms, including Carvounias, Carvouinis, Karbounes, Karboynias, Karvounias and Karvounis. In literature, the variety is considered part of the genetic diversity of Greek vineyards.
