The name Karatzovas is not an independent variety but serves as a synonym for the Opsimo Edessis variety. It is primarily used as a table grape, but is also utilized in the production of wines with low alcohol and acidity, as well as for the creation of traditional Greek Retsina.
The variety is classified as late-maturing and is characterized by susceptibility to downy mildew and gray mold. Genetic studies suggest that it is a natural hybrid of the Parmak Cerven and Achladi varieties.
The variety has numerous synonyms, including Amassi, Foustani, Karatsova Naousis, Karatsovitiko, Opsimo, and Staphyli Edessis. It should be noted that in some agricultural catalogs in Greece, a pepper variety is also mentioned under the name Karatzovas.
