The German variety Kanzler was obtained by crossing Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner. It is an early-maturing wine grape with low yield, small or medium-sized clusters, and yellow-green, broad-elliptical berries with an almost neutral aroma. The variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and downy mildew, and has problems with cane maturation and winter hardiness.
The table hybrid form bred by V. M. Kalugin is characterized by an early ripening period. Clusters reach a weight of 800–1500 g, berries are large with a weight of 15–18 g, dark red in color, and oval in shape. The frost resistance of the form is stated to be down to –23°C.
The Franco-American hybrid "Kanzler black" (Chancellor) is an interspecific hybrid involving Vitis vinifera, V. labrusca, V. rupestris and V. riparia. It is a vigorous and productive wine variety of medium-late maturity, intended for the production of red wines.
