The variety belongs to late-ripening wine grape varieties, reaching maturity in the first half of October. The vines are characterized by vigorous growth and the formation of thick shoots. The name Škrlet originated due to the appearance of reddish spots on the skin of mature berries, resembling traces of scarlet fever, when exposed to sunlight.

The plant possesses stable yield and is considered less susceptible to common grapevine diseases. The variety is indigenous to the Croatian regions of Pokuplje and Moslavina, where it has been known in literature since the mid-19th century.
