Mittervernatsch is not a separate breeding variety, but represents a historical group of grape variations within the Schiava group. This name is often identified with the Schiava Gentile variety, however historically it could combine different grape clones cultivated together in the vineyards of the Trentino-Alto Adige region.

A technical variety of mid-season maturity, characterized by vigorous vine growth. Leaves are predominantly rounded, from slightly dissected to three-lobed. Clusters are medium or large, conical in shape, often loose; berries are medium-sized, rounded. Wines are distinguished by soft tannins and fruity aromas.

Varieties of the Vernatsch group traditionally require careful maintenance, as they possess low resistance to fungal diseases, including downy mildew and rots. In modern practice, the term is used to isolate specific historical clones when creating single-varietal wines.
