The variety is a genetic mutation of Pinot Noir and is known by the international name Pinot Meunier, as well as the synonyms Schwarzriesling and Müllerrebe. The first references to the variety date back to the 16th century.

It is classified as a mid-late ripening wine grape variety. The use of rootstocks is recommended for its cultivation; it is responsive to building up old wood and various training methods, including high-trained systems with wide row spacing and long pruning.

The variety is one of the primary grapes for champagne production and is used in the creation of red wines. Its wines are characterized by acidity, and in blends, the variety adds delicacy and accelerates maturation. Due to the dense arrangement of berries in the cluster, the variety is sensitive to fungal diseases.
