Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is a natural hybrid (Prieto Picudo Tinto × Savagnin/Traminer). The names Molar, Saborinho, and Tinta Negra Mole are historically and genetically linked and often refer to the same grape, although the variety should be distinguished from the French Mollard or Negramoll.

The grape is used primarily in winemaking. In the Azores, it is used to create red wines characterized by a light garnet hue and specific aromas of wild strawberry, as well as iodine and saline notes resulting from cultivation on volcanic soils.

The vine is noted for high historical productivity and viability in challenging climatic conditions. When grown on the islands, the vines are often placed in depressions in volcanic rock, protecting them from strong oceanic winds with stone walls.
