The variety is a natural mutation of Pinot noir and has been known since the 17th century. The name "miller" (Müllerrebe, Meunier) is due to the strong white pubescence on the underside of the leaves and young shoots, which creates an effect of being dusted with flour. Synonyms include Pinot meunier and Schwarzriesling.
The plant belongs to early-mid or late maturity groups and is characterized by late bud break, which reduces the risk of damage by spring frosts. Leaves are rounded, clusters are medium-sized and dense, berries are small, dark blue or blue-black in color. The variety possesses good winter hardiness but is sensitive to gray mold (Botrytis cinerea).
This is a wine grape variety used in Champagne for the production of sparkling wines and in Germany for creating red wines with moderate tannin content and high acidity. The wines are characterized by fruity freshness and aromas of dark berries.
