The variety has Spanish roots and was developed in the Mediterranean region. The vines are vigorous; the period from bud break to harvest maturity of the berries is 127–157 days with an active temperature sum of 2650–3100°C. The variety has high requirements for sunlight and heat; if they are insufficient, the berries do not ripen fully.
The berries are small, with thick skin. Yield is 60–70 c/ha in arid conditions and 120–200 c/ha with irrigation. The variety has low resistance to fungal diseases and requires vine training. Wines made from this grape are distinguished by a dense structure, deep color, and aging potential.
