The variety originated as a result of spontaneous hybridization in the pre-phylloxera era. It is currently considered an autochthon of the Croatian Littoral and is under the protection of scientific centers due to its rarity.

Known synonyms are Plavàc krčki, Plavàc crveni, and Plavàc veli. The variety is a wine grape, included in the official lists of grape varieties authorized for winemaking in Croatia, and is used in the production of wines, including rosé.
