The variety is of Central European origin, including regions of modern-day Slovenia, Croatia, France, and Switzerland. In modern viticulture, it is rarely grown, primarily for the purpose of preserving genetic diversity.
The variety belongs to the early maturity groups. It is characterized by high acidity, low sugar content, and thin berry skins. Wines produced from this grape are distinguished by lightness and citrus notes, which is why the variety is more often used in blends to add freshness to beverages.
