The variety is a spontaneous natural mutation of the Plavac Mali variety, discovered in natural plantings on the Pelješac peninsula. The population is extremely limited, numbering between 1000 and 3000 vines. Unlike the original variety with dark blue fruit, the berries of Plavac Mali Sivi have a whitish-pink color while retaining the typical bunch structure.
This is a wine grape variety characterized by lower yields and lower bunch weight compared to the original variety. The ripening period falls between the second and third ten-day periods. It is cultivated under Dalmatian conditions on stony soils.
Wines from this variety are distinguished by their full body, minerality, and aromas of apricot, yellow plum, apple, and rose. Due to prolonged maceration on the skins, the beverages acquire an amber or rose-gold color and a specific tannic structure.
