Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is a product of the natural crossing of the Bottagera variety with an unknown variety. The name derives from a Piedmontese word meaning "tough skin," which reflects a morphological feature of the berries. During the growing season, the plant's stems acquire a bright red hue.

The plant has high vigor and requires canopy management. The variety is distinguished by good resistance to downy mildew and spring frosts, with moderate sensitivity to powdery mildew. Due to its thick skin, it can be susceptible to flower drop and infestation by the European grapevine moth.

Historically, the variety was used as a table grape, but it is currently grown primarily for winemaking. It is used in blends to give wines a deep color and potential for long aging.
