Variety description

The variety is autochthonous to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and has been known since the 14th century. The name of the variety is due to the characteristic reddish hue of the bunch stem before ripening. The vines have high vigor.

The leaf is round, five-lobed, and slightly dissected. Bunches are medium or small, conical, compact or medium compact. Berries are small, dark blue, with a thick waxy bloom, juicy pulp, and colored juice. The variety is relatively resistant to Botrytis cinerea and esca, susceptible to downy mildew and anthracnose, and has good winter hardiness.

The variety is used for the production of wines with ruby-garnet hues and aging potential. The aroma contains notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, plum, almond, and floral undertones. The variety is not intended for mechanical harvesting and requires green pruning to achieve full maturity.
