The variety is autochthonous to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and is genetically related to the Marzemino variety. It is a late-ripening variety with strong bush vigor. The leaf is rounded, five-lobed, and weakly incised. The bunches are medium-sized or small, dense, with a characteristic reddish hue of the peduncle before ripening.
The berries are small, dark blue with a waxy bloom and thick skin. The variety is relatively resistant to gray mold, but susceptible to downy mildew, anthracnose, and late spring frosts. It requires long pruning and green operations for full maturation.
A wine grape variety used for the production of wines with a deep ruby-violet color, high acidity, and pronounced tannin content. The aroma of the wines contains notes of dark berries, almonds, spices, herbs, and flowers. The aging potential is up to 10–15 years.
