The variety has ancient origins and is distributed in the regions of Slovenia, Italy, and Croatia. The vine is characterized by vigorous growth, with medium-sized leaves, three- or five-lobed, with slight pubescence on the underside.

Bunches are medium or small in size, conical in shape, and moderately dense. Berries are medium or small, round, dark blue in color with a thick waxy bloom. The skin is thick and rich in anthocyanins; the pulp is juicy with colored juice.

Refošk is a late-ripening variety with medium or below-average yield. It is relatively resistant to gray mold and esca, and sensitive to downy mildew and anthracnose. The variety represents a family of varieties including many clones.
