Weigela 'Elvera', known in the trade as Midnight Wine, is a compact, low-growing shrub ranging from 30 to 90 cm in height. The plant's crown is dense, with a spherical or cushion-like shape.

The leaves of the variety are dark purple or nearly black in color, sometimes with a bronze tint in autumn. The flowers are bright pink or red-pink, tubular-bell shaped, and gathered in small inflorescences.

The main flowering occurs in June, with possible repeat flowering at the end of summer. The variety is winter hardy (USDA zones 4–8) and suitable for cultivation in borders, group plantings, and containers.
