Walnut anthracnose

Juglans regia L.

A fungal disease caused by pathogens Marssonina juglandis and species of the genus Colletotrichum, affecting all aerial plant organs. It manifests as necrotic spots on leaves, fruits, and shoots, leading to premature defoliation and reduced kernel quality.

The primary causal agent of walnut anthracnose is the fungus Marssonina juglandis (teleomorph Ophiognomonia leptostyla). Recent research also confirms the etiological role of members of the genus Colletotrichum, including C. siamense, C. fioriniae, C. aenigma, C. fructicola, C. gloeosporioides, C. liaoningense, and C. sojae.

Disease symptoms develop on leaves, petioles, shoots, and fruits. Circular brown or black spots form on the leaves, which enlarge and coalesce into necrotic areas, causing premature leaf drop. On fruits, the infection manifests as depressed dark spots, which trigger rotting and the loss of kernel nutritional quality. Disease development is directly dependent on high air humidity and spring rainfall.
