Anthracnose of blackcurrant

Ribes nigrum L.

A fungal disease caused by the ascomycete Pseudopeziza ribis f. nigri, manifested by the formation of dark brown spots on leaves, shoots, and berries, leading to their premature drying and shedding.

The primary causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete Pseudopeziza ribis Kleb., represented by the specialized form f. nigri. Fungi of the genus Colletotrichum, particularly the species Colletotrichum fioriniae, can also act as pathogens of blackcurrant anthracnose.

On the leaves, the infection manifests in the middle of the growing season as small, round, dark brown spots 0.8–1.2 mm in diameter, in the center of which shiny black conidial acervuli eventually form. Infection of petioles, shoots, and pedicels is accompanied by the formation of depressed black ulcers.

Resistance of blackcurrant to anthracnose is of oligogenic nature and is achieved through breeding using wild species, such as R. dikuscha and R. glutinosum. Specific letter designations for resistance genes to this pathogen have not yet been established in scientific literature.
