Rust on Black Currant

Ribes nigrum L.

Fungal infection of black currant represented by blister rust (pathogen Cronartium ribicola) and cup rust (pathogen Puccinia ribesii-caricis). Both diseases are characterized by the formation of orange spore-bearing structures on leaves and a decrease in plant productivity.

In the reference 52 varieties crop Blackcurrant, where this is mentioned in the description.

Blister rust is a heteroecious disease, for which five-needled pines serve as intermediate hosts. Yellowish spots appear on the upper surface of currant leaves, while orange pustules develop on the lower surface, transforming into brown nipple-like outgrowths by the end of the growing season, which often leads to premature leaf drop.

Cup rust, which develops with the involvement of sedge, manifests as the emergence of bright orange cushions on leaves, shoots, and fruits. Specific cup-shaped aecia form on the underside of the leaf.

In black currant breeding for resistance to blister rust, interspecific hybridization methods using wild species are employed. Genetic control of resistance includes the identification of the specific gene Pe, derived from Ribes glutinosum, which provides oligogenic plant protection.
