Cultivation
Clematis L.
The primary method of vegetative propagation for clematis, which is critically dependent on a narrow plant development stage and the correct selection of the shoot section.
In the reference 14 varieties crop Clematis, where this is mentioned in the description.
The success of green clematis cuttings is strictly tied to the budding or early flowering stage, when shoots contain the maximum level of endogenous growth hormones. Delaying until the transition from the 'green' state to a lignified one fatally reduces the survival rate, as the capacity for rhizogenesis drops sharply during this time.
The middle part of the shoot is used for cuttings, as the tips are prone to rotting and the lower parts form roots poorly. A cutting typically includes one node with two buds. Double and semi-double varieties possess a lower rooting ability, and propagation using hardwood cuttings is largely ineffective.
The process requires strict control of the substrate temperature in the range of +18...+25 °C and moderate humidity, as excess water triggers decay. Due to the depletion of stock plants from regular cutting, they must be rejuvenated every 5–7 years, or alternative methods of clonal micropropagation should be used.
