A fungal disease caused by the pathogens Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae and Phytophthora cactorum, leading to the decay of the root system and wilting of the plant's aerial organs.

The primary causal agent of Phytophthora root rot is Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae, which infects the roots, manifesting as a reddening of the stele and the necrosis of lateral roots, giving the main root a "rat-tail" appearance. The species Phytophthora cactorum causes wilting, necrosis of the pistils, and the formation of hard, leathery spots on the berries.
The plant-pathogen interaction is described by the "gene-for-gene" model, with the resistance of cultivars determined by the dominant Rpf1 allele. To identify this gene in breeding, molecular markers such as SCAR-R1A for the resistance allele and OPO-16C for the recessive susceptibility allele are utilized.
