The primary causal agent of Phytophthora root rot is Phytophthora fragariae var. fragariae, which infects the roots, manifesting as a reddening of the stele and the necrosis of lateral roots, giving the main root a "rat-tail" appearance. The species Phytophthora cactorum causes wilting, necrosis of the pistils, and the formation of hard, leathery spots on the berries.
The plant-pathogen interaction is described by the "gene-for-gene" model, with the resistance of cultivars determined by the dominant Rpf1 allele. To identify this gene in breeding, molecular markers such as SCAR-R1A for the resistance allele and OPO-16C for the recessive susceptibility allele are utilized.
