Triticum durum Desf.
Fusarium head blight is a critically dangerous disease of durum wheat, which exhibits high susceptibility to it due to the specific structure of the spike, open flowering, and the biochemical composition of the grain.

The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Fusarium, among which the most aggressive to durum wheat are Fusarium graminearum, F. culmorum, F. poae, F. avenaceum, and F. sporotrichioides. The high vulnerability of this crop is due to the dense, awned spike, which traps pathogen spores, as well as the 'naked' grain and increased protein content, which promote mycelial development.
Symptoms manifest as premature bleaching of spikelets and the formation of a pink or orange-red coating on them. Upon infection, the grain becomes shriveled, wrinkled, and loses its vitreousness. Given the lack of highly resistant varieties, durum wheat breeding is focused on the introgression of resistance genes from wild relatives, such as the Fhb7 gene from intermediate wheatgrass, which is responsible for neutralizing trichothecene mycotoxins.
