The causative agents of the disease in naked oats are the fungi Pyrenophora avenae (synonym Helminthosporium avenae) and Bipolaris sorokiniana. Seed infection leads to seedling death both before and after emergence. Stripes with reddish-brown spots surrounded by a characteristic red border develop on the leaves, which results in the overall stunting of the affected plants.
A number of studies note that the seed infection rate of naked oats with this pathogen remains relatively low and in most cases does not exceed 15%. Certain crop samples exhibit practical resistance with an infection level of less than 10%, which is attributed to the presence of specific mechanisms in naked forms that protect the grain from infection penetration.
