Cultivation
Planting density is the number of plants per unit area, which determines the area of nutrition and the efficiency of resource utilization by the crop. This indicator directly influences yield formation and is an important tool for managing a variety's potential.
Mentioned in descriptions 5 959 varieties reference book.
Planting density is measured in thousands or millions of plants per hectare and determines the area of nutrition for each individual specimen. At an optimal value, plants utilize light, moisture, and nutrients most efficiently. In the case of high-density crops, intraspecific competition occurs, leading to stem elongation, weakening of the root system, and an increased risk of lodging, whereas in sparse crops, resources are not fully utilized and the area becomes overgrown with weeds.
The choice of density depends on the biological characteristics of the variety, including its developmental intensity and its ability to tiller or form side shoots. Different varieties respond differently to stress factors; therefore, recommendations for planting density should always comply with the characteristics of the specific hybrid or variety provided by the breeder.
The actual density in the field is determined not only by the seeding rate but also by field germination and the survival rate of plants at the time of harvest. The final indicator is adjusted depending on external conditions: with sufficient moisture and high soil fertility, higher rates are acceptable, whereas in arid conditions, density must be reduced to prevent moisture deficit in plants.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
