Rhododendrons have a surface and compact root system; therefore, wide rather than deep containers are preferred for their maintenance. The use of ordinary garden soil is unacceptable due to its tendency to compact; it is necessary to use specialized acidic substrates based on peat, bark, and conifer needles with a high degree of aeration.

A critical factor is the maintenance of stable moisture, as the risk of the root ball drying out in a container is significantly higher than in open ground. When planting, it is important not to bury the root collar, and during care, it is necessary to exclude the use of chlorine-containing fertilizers and limit top dressing to the first half of the growing season to ensure shoot maturation.
