Due to a well-developed root system that penetrates the soil up to 2 meters, brome forms a dense stand suitable for both haymaking and pasture use. The crop is characterized by a high proportion of leaves in the yield structure, reaching 52–56% in the first cut and up to 70% in the second, which ensures high-quality forage indicators.
The nutritional value of the plant changes significantly during the growing season: protein content decreases from 28% in the tillering phase to 7.7% by the fruiting phase. Smooth brome exceeds orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) and ryegrass (Lolium) in drought and winter hardiness, and also possesses an increased responsiveness to nitrogen fertilizer application, which is necessary to prevent a decrease in productivity due to excessive sod formation.
