Persian Clover Forage Use

Trifolium resupinatum L.

Persian clover is a high-quality legume crop with a crude protein content of 16–23%, characterized by low fiber concentration and high regrowth capacity after mowing or grazing.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Persian clover, where this is mentioned in the description.

The nutritional value of the crop is characterized by high palatability and low lignin content, which is approximately 3%. During the vegetation period, crude protein content can reach 27%. Due to the risk of bloat in cattle and cases of photosensitization in sheep, it is recommended to use the clover in mixtures with grasses.

The choice of use depends on the morphotype: erect forms of var. majus with thick hollow stems are preferred for silage and hay production, while prostrate forms of var. resupinatum are more effective for grazing due to their ability to self-regenerate.

The crop is characterized by high tolerance to waterlogging and soil salinity. Ensiling pure biomass is difficult due to high moisture and protein levels; therefore, suitability for this storage method directly depends on the characteristics of the specific variety.
